Despite being a densely populated city, New York City has a 22% vegetative canopy cover. This vegetation takes up a large amount of CO2 during the growing season. Wei et al., 2022 showed that on a typlical summer afternoon, the photosynthetic uptake of CO2 is similar to the CO2 emitted from on road transportation in NYC.

We are measuring CO2 at a number of sites around the city to develop a monitoring framework for the city. This work is ongoing.
